Conus guanche is a fascinating type of sea snail. It's a marine gastropod, which means it's a kind of mollusk that moves on its belly, like a slug. This snail belongs to the Conidae family, also known as the cone snails.

Just like other cone snails, Conus guanche is a predatory animal. This means it hunts other small creatures for food. It's also venomous, so it can "sting" if it feels threatened. Because of this, it's very important to be careful around live Conus guanche snails. It's best not to touch them at all.

What Does Conus guanche Look Like?

The shell of Conus guanche can be anywhere from 22 mm to 55 mm long. That's about the size of a small to medium-sized marble. It has a small shell with a spire that sticks up a bit.

Shell Features and Colors

The top part of the shell, called the spire, often has two light spiral lines. These lines are found between the middle of each spire and the seam (suture). Usually, the spires are smooth. However, some shells, especially near the very top, might look a bit wider and more rounded. The seam itself is easy to see and can be slightly wavy.

The main body of the shell, called the last whorl, is shaped like a cone. It's a little bit curved and shows clear lines where the shell grew over time. Some of these growth lines are a darker brown color. Near the bottom of the shell, there are spiral lines that are spaced out. These lines don't have any special color.

The main color of these shells is brown. On the spire, you'll see darker brown bands running lengthwise. Between these dark bands are lighter ones, which can even be white on some snails. The shoulder of the shell might have a few small brown spots.

The last whorl is also brown. As mentioned, some growth lines stand out as brown bands. These bands have a darker line in the middle and a slightly wider, lighter band around them. You might also notice two or three spiral bands on the last whorl. These bands have lighter patches, often white, and brown spiral lines made of dots placed evenly apart.

Where Does Conus guanche Live?

This marine snail lives in the Atlantic Ocean. You can find it off the coast of the Canary Islands.

In 1990, some snails that looked like Conus guanche were found in Cala Madonna, Lampedusa. These were later identified as a specific type called Conus guanche nitens.
