Convention of Vergara facts for kids
The Convention of Vergara (also called the Embrace of Vergara) was a very important agreement signed on August 31, 1839. It helped to end the main fighting in a big war in Spain called the First Carlist War.
This treaty was signed by two important generals. General Baldomero Espartero signed for the "Isabelines." These were people who supported the young Queen Isabella II. General Rafael Maroto signed for the "Carlists." The Carlists wanted Prince Carlos to be king instead of Isabella.
Where Did It Happen?
The two generals met near a town called Durango, Biscay. A British observer, Colonel Wylde, was also there. Britain had helped to try and make peace before. Brigadier Francisco Linage, Espartero's secretary, was also present.
What Was Discussed?
One of the biggest challenges in the talks was about "home rule" (called fueros). These were special local laws and rights for the Basque Country and Navarre. General Maroto had promised to protect these fueros. But General Espartero thought they went against Spain's constitution.
Even while they talked, both armies stayed ready to fight. Two other Carlist officers, La Torre and Urbiztondo, helped to make the treaty official with Espartero. The first written version didn't have Maroto's signature, but it was all agreed in his name. Later, Espartero sent a copy to Maroto to sign formally.
The first part of the treaty talked about the Basque fueros. It said that General Espartero would strongly ask the government to keep its promise. He would ask the Spanish Parliament to allow or change these special local laws.
The Agreement Is Accepted
Even though high-ranking officers signed the treaty, some Carlist soldiers, especially those from Navarre, were not happy. They didn't trust the agreement. Some officers even wanted to keep fighting.
However, on August 31, 1839, in Vergara, General Espartero gathered all the troops. He gave a speech and offered them a choice. They could either continue serving the Queen or go back home. The story says that all the soldiers decided to accept the treaty.
After this, General Rafael Maroto gave a powerful speech. He said that no one wanted Prince Carlos to be king more than him. But he was now sure that Prince Carlos could never bring happiness to his country. This was the only thing that mattered to Maroto.
With the main fighting over, Maroto became a lieutenant general again. He was also given an important job in the Supreme Tribunal of War and Marine.
