Discovering Bergara's History

A Center for Learning and Science

Bergara was home to a special school during the Enlightenment. This was a time when new ideas about science and knowledge were very popular. The school was run by the Real Sociedad Bascongada de Amigos del País, which means "Royal Basque Society of Friends of the Country." This group worked to spread new ideas and improve society.

The Discovery of Tungsten

A very important scientific discovery happened in Bergara. Two brothers, Juan José and Fausto Elhuyar, were scientists who worked here. In 1783, they successfully isolated a new element. They named this element Tungsten. Tungsten is a very strong metal used in many things today, like light bulbs and tools.

Bergara During the Carlist Wars

Bergara also played a part in a series of conflicts called the Carlist Wars. These wars took place in Spain during the 19th century. They were fought between different groups who wanted to decide who should rule Spain.

The Carlist Capital

During these wars, Bergara became very important for one of the groups, the Carlists. It served as their main base and where their leaders met. This made Bergara a significant location during the conflict.

The Vergara Embrace Peace Agreement

One of the Carlist Wars ended with an important agreement in Bergara. This agreement is known as the Vergara Embrace. It happened in 1839 between two important generals, Rafael Maroto and Baldomero Espartero, Prince of Vergara. They met and made a deal that helped bring peace to the region. This event is a famous part of Spanish history.
