The Coons House is a historic building in Clermont, New York. It is located along Route 9G. This house was built around the mid-1800s. It shows off the beautiful Greek Revival style.

It is special because it's the only Greek Revival house in Clermont built in the "full temple style." This means it has a grand front colonnade, which is a row of columns. In 1983, the Coons House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important historic sites across the United States. It is also part of the Hudson River Historic District, which is a National Historic Landmark.

What Does the Coons House Look Like?

The Coons House sits on a large piece of land, about 15.5 acres. Trees hide it from the road on its west side. A driveway leads to the house from the north. The area around it is mostly countryside. You can see pastures from a nearby horse farm and wooded areas.

Main House Features

The house is made of wood, covered with clapboard siding. It has two stories and three sections, called bays. On the front, facing west, there is a two-story portico. This is like a porch with a roof supported by four columns. These columns are polygonal, meaning they have many sides.

The main entrance is on the south side of the portico. It has pilasters, which are flat columns, on either side. Above the door, there is a transom light. This is a window above the doorway. A brick chimney rises from the north side of the house. On the south end, there is a smaller, one-story wing with a gable roof.

Other Buildings on the Property

There are two other buildings on the property. A small shed is located behind the main house. There is also a barn to the south. Both of these buildings are considered important to the house's history. They are part of why the Coons House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

History of the Coons House

The Coons House was built around the year 1850. Not much is known about who first owned or lived in the house. It was part of the large estates owned by the powerful Livingston family.

The way the house was built, with its Greek Revival style, suggests that its owner was important. However, it was built away from the main Livingston estate buildings. Its size was also more modest. This makes it likely that the Coons House was home to a trusted or senior employee of the Livingston family.
