The Story of Coopers Corner

The area known as Coopers Corner was once the very first town site of Bethel. In 1856, a group of Quaker immigrants from the eastern United States settled here. They started a community, and by 1865, they even had their own post office.

However, things changed in 1898. The Great Northern Railway decided to build its tracks about two miles west of the original town. Because trains were so important for travel and trade back then, almost the entire town of Bethel picked up and moved! They wanted to be closer to the new railway line.

But one person, a storekeeper named James Cooper, decided to stay put. He kept his business running at the old location. Because he was the only one who remained, the spot became known as Cooper's Corner. Over time, this historic location has officially become a part of the city of East Bethel.
