History of East Bethel
The area that is now East Bethel has a long history. Originally, the land belonged to the Chippewa Indians. In 1837, the United States bought these lands. Settlers began to arrive in the 1850s.
In 1858, the area became a Township, which is a type of local government. This was the same year Minnesota became a state. The Township was named Bethel, which means "House of God" in the Bible.
Early Settlers and Growth
The first settlers in Bethel were a group called the Quakers, who arrived in 1856. They quickly built a school and a church. However, they left the area after an event in 1862. Other settlers who left during that time later returned. They became farmers, tradesmen, and merchants. The population of Bethel Township grew slowly but steadily over the years.
Becoming a City
In the spring of 1957, local people decided to form a committee. Their goal was to make Bethel an official village. On May 3, 1957, they asked the Anoka County Board of Commissioners for approval. After a vote, the idea was approved.
There were some legal challenges, but eventually, East Bethel officially became a village on April 27, 1959. Later, on January 1, 1974, it officially became a city.
East Bethel is quite large, covering about 48 square miles. This makes it the third-largest city in the metro area by size.
