Andover's Past: A Look at History

Andover has an interesting history, starting way back in 1857.

From Round Lake to Grow Township

When Andover was first organized in 1857, it was called Round Lake Township. A few years later, in 1860, its name changed to Grow Township. This change happened after a speech by Galusha A. Grow, a U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania. He was famous for being against slavery and for helping create the Homestead Act, which gave land to settlers.

A New City is Born

In 1871, a part of Grow Township separated to form Ham Lake Township. Andover, which was once a stop on the Great Northern Railway, officially became a city in 1976.

The Mystery of the Name "Andover"

There's a fun story about how Andover got its name. Some people say a train once fell off the tracks and an eyewitness said it "went over and over." However, this story isn't true! An old newspaper article from 1899 mentions the name "Andover Station" even before any train tracks were built through the city. The real reason for the name "Andover" for the train station is still a mystery.
