Copper City is a small, undeveloped place in Glenn County, California. It's not a town with a mayor or a city council. Instead, it's an unincorporated community, which means it's a place where people live but it's not officially part of a city.

Copper City is located deep inside the Mendocino National Forest. It sits very high up, at an elevation of 5,837 feet (about 1,779 meters) above sea level.

The Story of Copper City

Copper City got its name because of a special discovery made long ago.

Copper Fever!

Back in the 1860s, people found copper ore along the mountain creeks in this area. Copper ore is a rock that contains the metal copper. When news spread about this discovery, many miners rushed to the remote spot. They had "Copper Fever," which means they were very excited about finding copper and hoped to get rich.

A Short-Lived Community

Miners quickly set up a small community in this distant part of the eastern Coastal Mountain Range. However, the mining boom didn't last very long. The community grew quickly, but it also disappeared almost as fast.

Today, there's nothing left of the old mining community. You won't find any buildings or signs of the miners who once lived there. Only the name "Copper City" remains, reminding us of its brief but exciting past.
