Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, often called the Othello Tunnels, is a cool place to visit near Hope, British Columbia in Canada. It's famous for its deep canyon carved by the Coquihalla River. The park also has an old railway line that's now a fun walking trail. This trail leads through five amazing tunnels and over several bridges, all built right into the steep rock cliffs of the gorge!
Park History
This park was first created in 1986. Back then, it was known as the Coquihalla Canyon Recreation Area. It became a full provincial park in 1997 and was renamed Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park. It started at about 151 hectares (373 acres) and grew a bit bigger in 2004 to its current size of 159 hectares (393 acres).
Good news for visitors! In May 2015, the famous Othello Tunnels reopened. They had been closed for over a year because some rocks had fallen, making them unsafe.
Movies Filmed Here
The park's tall rock cliffs and its location not too far from Vancouver have made it a popular spot for filming movies. Many well-known films have used Coquihalla Canyon as a backdrop. These include First Blood, Shoot to Kill, Far from Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog, Cabin in the Woods, and War for the Planet of the Apes.
