The Story of Yellow Dog

The movie is about a 15-year-old boy named Angus McCormick (Jesse Bradford). He lives in British Columbia, Canada, with his parents and younger brother, Silas. Angus often delivers newspapers to save money. He also learns how to survive in the wild from his dad. One day, Angus finds a lost Yellow Labrador dog. He really wants to keep him. His parents, John and Katherine, say yes. But Angus must promise to take full care of the dog. Angus names his new dog Yellow.

Lost at Sea

A few days later, Angus, his dad, and Yellow are on a boat trip. They are sailing along the coast of British Columbia. Suddenly, the water gets very rough. Their boat flips over. Angus's dad, John, is saved by a helicopter. He goes to the hospital with small injuries. But Angus and Yellow are left alone. They are stranded on the coast, far from any towns.

Angus's parents try very hard to get rescue teams to find them. Meanwhile, Angus remembers what his dad taught him. He uses his survival skills. Yellow, the smart dog, helps him too. They try to get someone's attention.

Surviving in the Wild

Angus makes a small shelter on the rocky shore. He uses his lifeboat and some tree branches. He checks what supplies he saved from the boat. He only has matches, fishing hooks, and some cookies. His girlfriend, Sara, made him the cookies. Angus catches a fish for dinner. He also digs for clams with Yellow.

They spend nine days on the shore. They don't have much luck finding help. Their food is running low. Angus realizes they must move. He decides they need to find civilization on their own. The closest lighthouse is about 20 miles south. It's a long journey through the wild Canadian land.

Facing Dangers

One cold, rainy night, Angus and Yellow are in their shelter. A group of wolves attacks them. Yellow chases one wolf away. He fights another. A third wolf goes after Angus. Angus tries to fight it off. He crawls away to safety. But the wolf comes back for him. Just in time, Yellow appears. He chases the wolf away. Yellow then leads a relieved Angus to safety through the rain.

For the next few days, finding food is hard. Angus eats Sara's cookies. He also finds grubs, berries, and wild plants. He even catches a small deer mouse in a trap. He shares it with Yellow. But it's not enough food.

Other dangers also test them. Rainstorms and cold weather hit them day and night. Angus has to build fires to stay warm. One day, Angus slips. He falls down a cliff. He breaks his left wrist. Later that day, Angus reaches a big lake. He sees the lighthouse on a hill across the lake. He builds a raft from branches and logs. With Yellow's help, he paddles across the lake.

Hope and Loss

Angus and Yellow finally reach the lighthouse. But it is empty. There is no food or supplies. Angus then sees a logging road. It runs down another hill a few miles away. He decides to head there. He hopes to find someone to help them.

The next day, Yellow brings a snowshoe hare to Angus. Angus kills it with a stick. He cooks it for their dinner. After eating and resting, they continue their journey. They come to a narrow gorge. A river runs below them. Angus finds a fallen tree across the gorge. He decides to cross it. But the other side is blocked by more fallen trees.

Just as Angus and Yellow start to lose hope, a plane flies over. The pilot sees them on the tree. He tells rescue teams what he found. A rescue helicopter is sent to pick them up. Angus is very happy when the helicopter arrives. A rescue worker is lowered down. He grabs Angus. Angus tells him to get Yellow. The man promises to come back for the dog. But Yellow bites the man's leg. As Angus and the man are lifted, Yellow falls off the tree. He tumbles into the river below. The team promises Angus they will find Yellow. But the winds get stronger. The helicopter has to take Angus to a hospital. Yellow is left behind. Yellow survives the fall. He swims to shore with an injured leg. But he is still alone.

A Happy Reunion

Angus is very happy to be back with his family. But he is sad about leaving Yellow. Rescue teams search for Yellow for days. But they cannot find him. After more than three weeks, they stop searching. They have budget problems. Angus blames himself for losing Yellow. But he still believes Yellow is alive. His family helps him search. They put up posters. They also search the wilderness near their home.

One afternoon, Angus's girlfriend Sara cheers him up. She gives him a kiss. Later that day, Angus blows his dog whistle one last time. An exhausted Yellow appears in the field behind the house. Angus and his family are overjoyed. Yellow has finally come home!
