Understanding Local Areas
What are Barrios and Sectors?
In Puerto Rico, a barrio is like a neighborhood or a district within a larger town or city. Think of it as a smaller part of a municipality (which is like a county or a big town).
These barrios are then divided even further into smaller areas called sectores (which means sectors in English). These sectors can have different names. Some are simply called sector, while others might be known as urbanización, reparto, barriada, or residencial. These names often describe the type of community or housing found there.
One of the sectors found in Corcovada barrio is along Carretera 109.
A Special Community
In 2014, Corcovada was named one of the "Special Communities of Puerto Rico" (Comunidades Especiales de Puerto Rico). This means it was identified as a place that could use extra help and support for its people and development. The government works to improve these communities.
