Cordes is a fascinating ghost town located in Yavapai County, Arizona, in the United States. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, leaving behind empty buildings. Cordes is about eight miles southeast of Mayer.

The Story of Cordes

Cordes was started in 1883 by a man named John Henry Cordes. He had big plans for this new settlement.

How Cordes Got Its Name

John Henry Cordes first wanted to name the town "Antelope Junction." However, his request for a post office with that name was turned down in 1883. This was because another place in Arizona was already called Antelope Station. That town is now known as Stanton.

So, John Henry Cordes chose a different name for his town: his own last name, Cordes. This name was approved, and the town officially became Cordes.

The End of the Town

The post office in Cordes was an important part of the community. It helped people send and receive mail. But in 1944, the Cordes post office closed down. After that, fewer and fewer people lived there. By the 1950s, the town was mostly empty and became a ghost town.

Today, Cordes remains a quiet reminder of Arizona's past. It shows how towns can grow and then fade away over time.
