The Cordillera Azul antbird (Myrmoderus eowilsoni) is a special type of passerine bird. It belongs to the antbird family, called Thamnophilidae. This bird has only been found in one place: the Cordillera Azul mountains in the San Martín Region of Peru.

Its natural home is a wet, misty mountain forest. This kind of forest is known as a humid montane forest.

Discovering the Cordillera Azul Antbird

Scientists officially described this bird in 2018. Andre Moncrieff and his team were the ones who gave it its scientific name. They chose the name Myrmoderus eowilsoni.

The second part of its name, eowilsoni, honors a famous American naturalist. His name was Edward Osborne Wilson. He was a very important scientist who studied nature and insects.

Where it Lives

The Cordillera Azul antbird lives in a very specific part of Peru. This area is called the Cordillera Azul. It's a mountain range that is part of the Andes.

The humid montane forests there are full of life. They have many different plants and animals. These forests are often covered in clouds and mist. This makes them very damp and green.

Antbirds and Their Habits

Antbirds are a group of birds that mostly live in Central and South America. They often eat insects. Some antbirds even follow swarms of army ants to catch insects that are trying to escape.

We don't know a lot about the Cordillera Azul antbird's exact habits yet. But like other antbirds, it likely plays an important role in its forest home. It helps control insect populations.

Protecting Its Home

Because this bird lives in only one small area, its home is very important. Protecting the Cordillera Azul forests helps keep this unique bird safe. It also helps many other plants and animals that live there.
