Cordioniscus stebbingi is a tiny creature known as a woodlouse. It belongs to a group of woodlice called the Trichoniscidae family. You can find these small animals in many parts of the world, including Europe, Northern Asia (but not China), and North America.

What is a Woodlouse?

Woodlice are small, segmented creatures that are related to crabs and lobsters, even though they live on land! They are not insects. Woodlice like to live in damp, dark places, such as under rocks, logs, or leaves. They are often called "roly-polies" or "pill bugs" because some kinds can roll up into a ball when they feel scared.

Where Does Cordioniscus stebbingi Live?

Cordioniscus stebbingi is found across a wide area. Its home includes many countries in Europe and a large part of Northern Asia. However, you won't find this specific woodlouse in China. It also lives across the ocean in North America. These woodlice prefer places that are a bit wet and cool, just like most other woodlice.

Different Kinds of Cordioniscus stebbingi

Sometimes, animals of the same species can have slight differences depending on where they live. These slightly different groups are called subspecies. Cordioniscus stebbingi has two known subspecies:

  • Cordioniscus stebbingi boettgeri (discovered by Verhoeff in 1929)
  • Cordioniscus stebbingi stebbingi (this is the original type of the species)

These subspecies are very similar but might have small variations in their looks or where exactly they are found.
