History
How Cornish Began
Before Oklahoma became a state, Cornish was part of the Chickasaw Nation, which was a Native American territory. The town got its name from John E. Cornish, who was a local resident and raised cattle in the area. A post office opened in Cornish in 1901, which helped the community grow.
The Cornish Orphans Home
In 1907, a special place called the Cornish Orphans Home was started by M. E. "Mose" Harris. This home helped children who didn't have families for about 40 years. It was an important part of the community for a long time.
The Oilfield and Changes
In August 1910, a big oilfield called the Healdton Oilfield was found about 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Cornish. Because of this discovery, a new town called Ringling was started in June 1914. Ringling was built closer to the oilfield and had a railway, which made it a better place for businesses. Many people and businesses from Cornish moved to Ringling, and Cornish became much smaller.
