Cornwallis Crescent is a curved street with 24 large houses. These homes were built in the late 1700s, a time when a specific style called Georgian architecture was very popular. The houses are located between York Gardens and Cornwallis Avenue.
The buildings are considered very important historically. They are made of brick, but the front parts are covered with smooth limestone. The back of the houses also has limestone details. The roofs are slanted and covered with slate tiles. Each house has three main floors, plus extra space in the attic and basement.
A Look at Its History
Building Cornwallis Crescent started in 1791. It's thought that a person named William Paty might have been involved in the early stages. However, the work had to stop in 1793 because the people developing the project ran out of money.
The street was finally finished much later, by 1827. The shared gardens at both ends of the crescent were completed even later, in 1880.
You can find a special plaque at 31 Cornwallis Crescent. This plaque remembers two sisters, Susanna Winkworth and Catherine Winkworth. Susanna was known for her kindness and helping others. Catherine was famous for writing hymns, which are religious songs.
