History of Cornway College

How Cornway College Started

The college will bloom like a cornflower.

—Lovemore Kurotwi Junior, circa 2006

Cornway College was started by Lovemore Kurotwi. It first opened its doors on January 23, 2006. The first students came from a study group called Whitehorse Academy, which had 120 pupils.

The name "Cornway College" was actually suggested by Lovemore Kurotwi Junior when he was just eleven years old! He thought the college would "bloom like a cornflower." The first Headmaster of Cornway College was Edmore Mutekwe.

School Motto

And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.

— Genesis 1:3, New International Version

The motto of Cornway College is "Let There Be Light." This phrase comes from a famous verse in the Bible, Genesis 1:3.

This motto means spreading knowledge and getting rid of ignorance. It's like bringing light to dark places by learning new things. Many other schools and universities around the world use a similar motto, like "Fiat Lux" in Latin. You can see the motto on the Cornway College emblem.

How to Join Cornway College

Senior College Admission

Getting into Cornway College mostly depends on how well you do academically.

  • For students wanting to join Form One, you usually need to take an entrance exam. If you can't take the exam, you might be able to apply using your Cambridge Primary qualification, ZIMSEC Grade Seven qualification, or other similar results. This depends on if there are places available.
  • For Forms Two and Three, you'll need to provide reports or assessments from your previous school, along with a transfer letter. Again, this depends on available spots.
  • For the Sixth Form (Lower Six only), your admission is based on your IGCSE, Ordinary Level, or similar qualifications.

School Houses

Cornway College has four houses. These houses compete against each other, especially in sports like athletics during the first term. Students who do well in their house competitions are then chosen to join the main Athletics College team.
