The Story of Cornway College
How It All Began
The college will bloom like a cornflower.
—Lovemore Kurotwi Junior, circa 2006
Cornway College was founded by Lovemore Kurotwi and officially opened on January 23, 2006. It started with students from a study group called Whitehorse Academy.
The name "Cornway College" was suggested by the founder's son, Lovemore Kurotwi Junior, when he was just eleven. He said the name meant "The college will bloom like a cornflower."
Growing Through the Years
Over the years, Cornway College has grown and achieved many things.
In 2010, the school finished building its dorms, so students could start living on campus as boarders.
A year later, in 2011, the senior school became an official center for Cambridge International Examinations. This meant students could take important international exams like the Ordinary Level and Advanced Level right at their own school.
The college has also become known for its strong sports teams. In 2012, the school hosted a big sports festival for soccer and basketball. That same year, the national under-13 soccer team, coached by the famous player Peter Ndlovu, used Cornway's fields for a training camp.
In 2013, the school got buses to help students and staff travel to and from Harare. The sports teams continued to succeed, with the boys' volleyball team winning a major tournament in South Africa. Students also excelled in science, winning a prize for creating a remote control system that worked with a mobile phone.
The school continued to grow in 2014. The junior school started using the Cambridge Primary program, an international education plan. The sports teams had another great year, with the volleyball team winning a national championship. The school was also recognized as one of the top 10 high schools in the country.
In 2015, the boys' basketball team won a major tournament. The school's quiz team also did well, placing second in a competition. Several students were even chosen to play for a special handball team that traveled to Germany.
By 2016, the school's Interact Club was giving back to the community. They donated hundreds of books and school supplies to a rural school. The sports teams kept up their winning streak, with the boys' basketball and soccer teams both winning championships.
The School's Motto
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
— Genesis 1:3, New International Version
The motto of Cornway College is "Let There Be Light." This famous phrase comes from the Bible, in the book of Genesis.
It suggests spreading knowledge and getting rid of ignorance. Many other schools and universities around the world, like the University of California, use a Latin version of this motto, "Fiat Lux." The motto is an important part of the Cornway College emblem.
How to Join the School
Getting into Cornway College is mainly based on a student's academic performance.
- For Form One: Students usually need to pass an entrance exam. If they can't take the exam, they might be able to get in using their Grade Seven results or another similar qualification.
- For Forms Two and Three: Students need to provide their report cards and a transfer letter from their old school.
- For Sixth Form: To join the advanced classes, students need good grades in their IGCSE or Ordinary Level exams.
School Houses
Students at Cornway College are divided into four houses. These houses compete against each other in sports, especially in track and field events. The best athletes from these competitions are chosen to represent the college on its official teams.
Here are the four houses:
Houses | Colour | Year founded |
---|---|---|
Cheetah | Yellow | 2006 |
Eland | Red | 2011 |
Lion | Green | 2006 |
Tiger | Blue | 2006 |
