Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Corsicana is a small, quiet place located in western Barry County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county's rules and services. Corsicana is found near a small stream that flows into Shoal Creek. It's about four miles southwest of a town called Purdy.

What is the History of Corsicana?

Corsicana has an interesting past, especially when it comes to its name! Before it was called Corsicana, this community had a different name: Gadfly.

When Did Corsicana Get Its Name?

The area first got a post office in 1848, and it was named Gadfly. Post offices were very important back then for sending and receiving letters. Later, in 1869, the name of the community and its post office was officially changed to Corsicana. This new name came from a place called Corsicana in New York. It was common for new settlements to take names from places people remembered from their old homes. The post office in Corsicana eventually closed its doors in 1905.
