Cory McGrath, born on February 4, 1979, is a former professional Australian rules football player. He played for several teams during his career, including the Carlton and Essendon Football Clubs in the top-level Australian Football League (AFL). He also played for teams like South Fremantle in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and South Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Later, he played in the Victorian Football League (VFL) for the Northern Bullants and Port Melbourne.
Playing in the AFL
Cory McGrath began his AFL journey with Essendon in 2000. He was added to their main team from the 'rookie list', which is a group of promising new players. He made his first AFL appearance in 2001. People saw him as an exciting player, especially in the midfield.
In 2003, Cory moved to the Carlton team. He quickly made a good impression in 2004. He joined the main team midway through the year, coming from Carlton's partner team, the Northern Bullants. From then on, he played in every game.
The year 2005 was even better for McGrath. He played 19 games and was considered one of Carlton's best players, even though it was a tough year for the team. In 2006, he played another 19 games. He often took on a special role called a "tagging role" in the midfield. This meant he would closely guard an opponent's key player. He was known for being a "hard ball winner," meaning he was good at getting the ball in tough situations. Even though he had a good season, Carlton decided not to keep him on the team at the end of 2006. He was 27 years old at the time.
After the AFL
After leaving the AFL, Cory McGrath continued his football career. In 2007, he played for the South Adelaide Football Club in the SANFL.
He then spent five seasons playing for the Port Melbourne Football Club in the VFL. A big highlight of his time there was being part of the Port Melbourne team that won the championship in 2011. That team had an amazing season, winning every single game. Cory McGrath decided to retire from football at the end of 2011.
