Toby Jason McGrath (born 11 October 1980) is a talented Australian rules footballer. He played for the South Fremantle team in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). He was also part of the West Coast Eagles and Essendon teams in the Australian Football League (AFL). However, he did not play any official games for those AFL clubs.

Toby's Early Life and Football Start

Toby McGrath was born in Northam, Western Australia. He has three brothers: Bradley, Cory, and Ashley. Cory and Ashley also played Australian Football at the highest level (AFL). Toby started playing junior football in Katanning. He then joined the South Fremantle team in the WAFL, playing his first game in 1998.

Toby's Time in the AFL

Toby had a short time trying out for the professional Australian Football League (AFL). He was chosen from South Fremantle to join the West Coast Eagles' rookie list. After a year, he was removed from their list without playing a game.

He then got another chance with the Essendon Football Club in 2002 and 2003. He even played with his brother Cory there. But again, he did not get to play in a senior AFL game.

Amazing WAFL Career

Toby McGrath became a very important player for the South Fremantle team in the WAFL.

Awards and Championships

In 2004, he won the South Fremantle Football Club's Best & Fairest Award. This award goes to the team's best player. In 2005, he had an amazing year. He won the Sandover Medal, which is the WAFL's most important award for the best player in the league. He also won the Simpson Medal for being the best player in the Grand Final. That same year, he was part of the South Fremantle team that won the WAFL premiership (championship).

Toby played for the Western Australia (WA) state team six times. He played in 2000, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, and 2010. In 2008, he was the captain of the WA team that won against Queensland.

Captain and Club Legend

In 2008, Toby was chosen as the captain of South Fremantle. He played his 150th game for the club that year. He also won his second Best & Fairest award. In 2009, he played in his fifth WAFL Grand Final. He led South Fremantle as captain to win the WAFL premiership, which was his second championship with the team.

Toby played his 200th game for South Fremantle in 2010. In 2011, he was named in South Fremantle’s Indigenous Team of The Century. In 2012, he was included in the WAFL’s Best 25 players of the Last 25 Years. He was added to the South Fremantle Hall of Fame in 2022. Toby is known as one of the most successful players in the WAFL.

Life Outside Football

Toby McGrath also works as a firefighter for the Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia. He has three brothers: Cory, Ashley, and Bradley. Cory and Ashley both played in the AFL. Toby also has cousins who played professional football, including Mark Lecras, Marty McGrath, and Dion Woods.
