The bare-faced go-away-bird (scientific name: Crinifer personatus) is a unique bird found in eastern Africa. It belongs to the Musophagidae family, which includes other birds like turacos. This bird gets its name from its special bare, black face, which makes it stand out.

These birds are about 48 centimeters (about 19 inches) long, from their beak to their tail. They weigh between 210 and 300 grams (about 7 to 10 ounces). Both male and female birds look very similar, but the female has a green beak. You can often hear them making a loud "kow-kow" sound.

Where Do They Live?

The bare-faced go-away-bird lives in two main areas in Africa. One group is found in Ethiopia. The other group lives in countries like Burundi, DRC, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

They prefer open woodlands, thick bushes, and even farms with scattered trees. You can find them at altitudes up to 1,400 meters (about 4,600 feet). In some places, like Loita, they can live even higher, up to 2,200 meters (about 7,200 feet), among cedar and acacia trees.

Bird Behavior and Habits

Bare-faced go-away-birds are known for being quite noisy and active. They often move around alone or in small groups.

What Do They Eat?

These birds mostly enjoy eating fruits. They also munch on leaf buds and various seeds.

How Do They Raise Their Young?

Like other turacos, the bare-faced go-away-bird lays two to three greenish-white eggs during each breeding season. They often build their nests high up in tall acacia trees.

Different Types of Bare-faced Go-away-birds

Scientists recognize two slightly different types, or "races," of the bare-faced go-away-bird. These types live in different areas:

  • C. p. personatus: This type lives in the Ethiopian Rift Valley. It has more green feathers on its chest and tiny brown feathers on its face.
  • C. p. leopoldi: This type is found in southern Uganda, southwestern Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia. Its face is completely bare and black, and it has less green on its chest.
