Cosimo Lotti's Early Life and Work
Cosimo Lotti was born in Florence, Italy, in 1571. He first learned from a famous artist named Bernardino Poccetti. Later, he worked with Bernardo Buontalenti, another well-known designer. Together, they helped design the famous Boboli Gardens in Florence. Lotti was especially good at adding water features, like fountains, to gardens. He also painted, and one of his paintings, called Birth of Mary, can be seen in a church in Prato.
Moving to Spain and Royal Projects
In 1626, Cosimo Lotti left Florence and moved to Spain. He was invited by the Count-Duke of Olivares. Lotti joined the court of King Philip IV as an engineer.
In Spain, Lotti redesigned royal gardens in the Italian style. He created many impressive fountains. He also amazed the King with his clever special effects for plays. One famous show was a musical piece with poetry by Lope de Vega. Lotti's engineering made the stage come alive.
The King's Stage Manager
Cosimo Lotti became the main organizer for the theater at the Palacio del Buen Retiro. This was a grand palace for the King. King Philip IV was very impressed with Lotti's work. Because of his talent, Lotti was given a special payment from the King. He stayed in Madrid until he passed away in 1643.
