What does the name "Cosna" mean?
The name Cosna has an interesting history. In 1899, a man named Lieutenant J. S. Herron thought the name came from the Tanana people. These are Native Alaskan groups who live in the area.
However, about 100 years later, a language expert named William Bright had a different idea. He suggested the name came from the Koyukon words kk'os and no. Kk'os means a type of rock called schist. No' means river. So, the name might mean "schist rock river."
