Coso, also known as Granite Springs, was once a small community in Inyo County, California. It is found in the Coso Range, about 4 miles (6.4 km) southeast of Coso Peak. Today, the area where Coso was located is part of the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake.

A Bit of History

In 1860, Dr. Darwin French found gold in this area. That's when the place was first called Granite Springs. The name Coso comes from the Coso people, who are the Native Americans who lived in this region.

Other Places Called Coso

It can be a little confusing because there are at least three places named Coso in Inyo County!

  • The Coso settlement we are talking about is sometimes called Old Coso. It is located southwest of Darwin, California.
  • There is also Coso Junction, which is found on US 395.
  • South of Coso Junction, you can find a train stop called Coso.
