Costa Beck facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Costa Beck is a small river located in the Ryedale area of North Yorkshire, England. It's known for its clear water and the many fish that live there.

Where the Costa Beck Begins and Ends

The Costa Beck starts at a place called Keld Head Spring. This spring is about half a mile west of a town called Pickering.

The Costa Beck is a tributary of the River Rye. A tributary is a smaller river or stream that flows into a larger river. The River Rye then joins the River Derwent. Finally, the River Derwent flows into the much larger River Ouse at a place called Barmby on the Marsh.

The Name of the River

The name "Costa Beck" comes from an old Scandinavian language. It means a river that is full of fish or full of life! This name perfectly describes the river even today.

A River Full of Life

The water in the Costa Beck is famous for being very clear. Because of this, it's a popular spot for fly fishing. People often come here to fish, and it's usually free if you arrange it beforehand.

You can find many different types of fish in the Costa Beck, including:

  • Trout
  • Dace
  • Grayling
  • Salmon
  • Pike

Besides fish, you might also spot beautiful kingfishers flying quickly above the water. These birds are known for their bright colors and their skill at catching fish.

Today, the river flows right next to Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo. Sometimes, visitors from the theme park come to the river to enjoy a bit of fishing.

History of the Costa Beck

Long ago, around the year 1200, the Costa Beck was used for transporting goods by small boats. This was especially helpful for mills, which are buildings where grain is ground into flour. These mills needed the river to move their products.
