Occupation Romanian actor, theatre manager

Costache Caragiale (born March 29, 1815 – died February 13, 1877) was an important Romanian actor and theatre manager. He played a big part in helping Romanian theatre grow and become popular.

He was born in Bucharest, a city in a region called Wallachia. Costache started acting in 1835. Just a few years later, in 1838, he created his own theatre group in Iaşi, which was in Moldavia. This group later became part of the first Romanian National Theatre.

A Life in Theatre

Costache Caragiale worked in many different regional theatres across Romania. He spent a lot of time in cities like Iaşi, Craiova, and Botoşani. He really wanted to see Romanian plays performed on stage. Because of this, he strongly encouraged people to use plays written by Romanian writers of his time. Some of these famous writers included Vasile Alecsandri and Constantin Negruzzi.

Leading the National Theatre

From 1852 to 1855, Costache Caragiale had a very important job. He was the first director of the National Theatre of Bucharest. This was a big step for Romanian theatre, and he helped shape its future.

His Own Plays

Besides acting and managing, Costache Caragiale also wrote some comedies himself. Two of his well-known plays are O repetiţie moldovenească (which means A Moldavian Rehearsal), written in 1844, and O soaré la mahala (meaning A Soiree in the Neighbourhood), written in 1847.

Costache Caragiale was also related to another very famous Romanian playwright, Ion Luca Caragiale. Ion Luca was his nephew. Costache's younger brother, Iorgu Caragiale, was also an actor and theatre director, showing that talent ran in the family!

His Writings

Costache Caragiale wrote several plays and other works during his career. Here are some of his notable writings:

  • Scrieri a lui Costache Caragiale ("Writings by Costache Caragiale"), published in 1840.
  • O repetiţie moldovenească sau Noi şi iar Noi ("A Moldavian Rehearsal or We And We Again"), a comedy from 1844.
  • O soaré la mahala sau Amestecul de dorinţi ("A Soirée in the Low-Life Neighborhood or The Mixture of Aspirations"), another comedy.
  • Prologul pentru inaugurarea noului teatru din București ("Prologue at the Inauguration of the New Theater in Bucharest"), written for a special event in 1852.
