About the Blue Coua
Where Does its Name Come From?
The blue coua was first described by a famous scientist named Carl Linnaeus in 1766. He gave it its scientific name, Coua caerulea. The name Coua comes from the Malagasy language, spoken in Madagascar. It's from the word koa, which is what people there call a cuckoo. Long ago, there were about twelve different kinds of coua birds. Today, only eight or nine of these species are still alive.
What Does a Blue Coua Look Like?
The blue coua has amazing deep blue feathers all over its body. It also has a special blue oval patch around its eye that has no feathers. Like other cuckoos, these birds have large feet. They even have a unique third toe that can point forwards or backwards! Blue couas have a somewhat bulky shape. They have short, wide wings and a long tail. You can often see these features when they glide gracefully between trees. These birds are about 48 to 50 centimeters (19 to 20 inches) long. They weigh between 30 and 60 grams (1 to 2 ounces). Female blue couas are usually a little bit bigger than males.

Conservation Status
The blue coua is a common bird in its natural habitat. Its population seems to be stable, meaning their numbers are not decreasing. Because of this, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed the blue coua as a species of "least concern". This means they are not currently in danger of extinction.
