The North Coulombe River (called rivière Coulombe Nord in French) is a smaller river that flows into the Coulombe River. The Coulombe River then joins Lake Aylmer, which is part of the Saint-François River. Eventually, these waters reach the mighty St. Lawrence River.
This river is located in Quebec, Canada, on the south side of the St. Lawrence River. It flows through two different areas:
- Saints-Martyrs-Canadiens: This town is in the Arthabaska Regional County Municipality, part of the Centre-du-Québec region.
- Beaulac-Garthby: This town is in the Les Appalaches Regional County Municipality, part of the Estrie region.
Where the River Flows
The North Coulombe River is surrounded by several other important water areas. These are like its neighbors in the water world.
- To the north: Lake Breeches and Sunday Lake.
- To the east: Moose River, Longue Pointe watercourse, Lake Aylmer, and the Saint-François River.
- To the south: Lake Aylmer, Ward Bay, and the Saint-François River.
- To the west: Rivière au Canard.
The North Coulombe River starts from a small marshy lake. This lake is located about 1.7 kilometers south of Sunday Lake. It's also about 3.1 kilometers east of the village of Saints-Martyrs-Canadiens. Another nearby lake, Breeches Lake, is about 2.6 kilometers to the north.
From its starting point, the North Coulombe River travels about 16.0 kilometers. Here's how it flows:
- First, it goes about 3.9 kilometers towards the northeast, then turns east. It continues until it meets another small stream.
- Next, it flows about 3.4 kilometers towards the southeast. It runs alongside the border of the Disraeli area. This part of the river reaches the border of Beaulac-Garthby.
- Finally, it flows about 8.7 kilometers more towards the southeast. This last stretch leads to where it joins the Coulombe River.
The North Coulombe River ends its journey in a forested area. It flows into the north side of the Coulombe River in Beaulac-Garthby.
What's in a Name?
The name "rivière Coulombe Nord" (North Coulombe River) was officially recognized. This happened on December 5, 1968, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec. This commission is in charge of naming places in Quebec.
