Her Early Life and Family
Augusta was born on January 19, 1757. She was the second child of Heinrich XXIV, Count Reuss of Ebersdorf and Countess Karoline Ernestine of Erbach-Schönberg. Her family lived in a place called Ebersdorf.
Ebersdorf was a special place because it was a center for a religious movement called Pietism. Pietism was a way of life that focused on strong personal faith and living a very religious life. Augusta's grandparents were big fans of this movement. Her great-aunt was even married to a leader of the Moravian Church, another religious group. This background helped shape Augusta's deep religious beliefs later in her life.
Her Marriage and Family Life
Augusta's father wanted to find a good husband for his beautiful daughter. He asked a painter named Johann Heinrich Tischbein to paint a portrait of Augusta. In the painting, she looked like Artemisia, a famous queen from ancient times.
Her father showed this painting to many important people. One person who saw it was Francis, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. He fell deeply in love with Augusta after seeing her portrait. He even bought the painting for a very high price!
However, Duke Francis was already supposed to marry someone else, his cousin Princess Sophie of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Sadly, Princess Sophie passed away just seven months after their wedding. This meant Duke Francis was free to marry again.
On June 13, 1777, Augusta married Duke Francis in Ebersdorf. They had 10 children together. Seven of their children grew up to be adults. Many of them became very important figures in royal families across Europe.
Her Children and Grandchildren
Augusta's children and grandchildren played big roles in European history. Here are some of her most famous children:
- Victoria, Duchess of Kent: She was the mother of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.
- Leopold I, King of Belgium: He became the first King of Belgium.
Augusta was the grandmother of many important monarchs. These include:
- Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom (through her mother, Victoria).
- Albert, Prince Consort (Queen Victoria's husband), who was also Augusta's grandchild (through his father, Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha).
- Ferdinand II, King Consort of Portugal.
- Leopold II of Belgium, the second King of the Belgians.
- Empress Carlota of Mexico.
