The Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld was a small country in what is now Germany. It was one of the many Ernestine duchies. These duchies were created when a ruler named Ernest divided his land among his sons. Over time, these lands were split into even smaller duchies.
Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld officially became a duchy on July 29, 1735. However, the areas of Coburg and Saalfeld had been ruled by the same person since 1699.
This duchy stopped existing in 1825. This happened because only men could rule these duchies. The last male ruler from the family of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg died. After this, the different dukes rearranged their lands. Saalfeld became part of Saxe-Meiningen. Gotha and Coburg joined together to form a new duchy called Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
