Saxe-Coburg (German: Sachsen-Coburg) was a small country in what is now Bavaria, Germany. It was a "duchy," which means it was ruled by a duke.

Saxe-Coburg was part of a larger group of lands called the Ernestine duchies. These lands were ruled by different branches of the same family.

History of Saxe-Coburg

Saxe-Coburg began in 1572. It was formed after an event called the Division of Erfurt. At first, it was part of a bigger area known as Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach.

Splitting the Lands (1596)

In 1596, Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach was split into two parts. Johann Casimir became the ruler of Saxe-Coburg. His brother, Johann Ernst, became the ruler of Saxe-Eisenach.

Changes in Rulers (1633-1680)

When Duke Johann Casimir died in 1633, he had no sons. So, his brother Ernst of Saxe-Eisenach took over both countries. After Ernst died in 1638, Saxe-Coburg was given to other parts of the Ernestine duchies. It did not exist as a separate duchy for a while.

Becoming a Duchy Again (1681)

Saxe-Coburg became a duchy again in 1681. This meant it was once more a separate country with its own duke.

Sharing a Ruler (1699-1735)

From 1699, Saxe-Coburg shared a ruler with another duchy called Saxe-Saalfeld. This happened after Albrecht of Saxe-Coburg died without sons. Sharing a ruler is sometimes called a "personal union." It means two different countries have the same person as their leader.

Merging into Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (1735)

In 1735, Saxe-Coburg and Saxe-Saalfeld officially joined together. They became one new duchy called Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. This new duchy continued to exist for many years.
