The Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen was a small country in what is now Germany. It was one of the Ernestine duchies, which were a group of small states ruled by different branches of the same family. A "duchy" is a territory ruled by a duke or duchess.
The dukes of Saxe-Meiningen were not as famous as some other European rulers. They did not try to create a huge, long-lasting royal family like their relatives in the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
Like many German monarchies, the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen became part of the Weimar Republic after World War I. This happened when Germany changed from an empire to a republic.
In 1825, some changes happened to the Ernestine territories. This was after the ruling family of another duchy, Saxe-Gotha, ended. Saxe-Meiningen gained new lands, including Hildburghausen and Saalfeld. The state of Saxe-Meiningen later joined the new state of Thuringia in 1920.
The capital city of Saxe-Meiningen was Meiningen. In 1905, the duchy covered about 2,468 square kilometers. It had a population of around 269,000 people. The summer home for the dukes was a place called Altenstein.
Today, the head of the old Ducal House of Saxe-Meiningen is Prince Frederick Konrad, who was born in 1952.
