Counting the cost is the name of two important stories, called parables, that Jesus told. These two parables are found in the New Testament part of the Bible, in the book of Luke, chapter 14, verses 25-33. They teach us about thinking carefully before making a big commitment.

Counting the Cost: A Lesson from Jesus

Large groups of people were traveling with Jesus. He turned to them and shared a powerful message. He wanted them to understand what it truly means to follow him. He said that if someone wants to be his follower, they must put him first, even before their family or their own life. This means being completely dedicated to him.

What Did Jesus Say?

Jesus then told two short stories to explain his point:

  • Building a Tower: Imagine someone wants to build a tall tower. Before they start, they would first sit down and figure out how much it will cost. They need to make sure they have enough money to finish the whole project. If they only build the foundation and then run out of money, everyone who sees it will make fun of them. They would say, "This person started to build but couldn't finish!"
  • A King Going to War: Think about a king who is about to go to war against another king. He would first sit down and think. Does he have enough soldiers (say, ten thousand) to fight against the other king's army (say, twenty thousand)? If he realizes he doesn't have enough, he would send a message to the other king while they are still far apart. He would ask for terms of peace instead of fighting a war he can't win.

Jesus used these examples to show that following him requires careful thought and full commitment. Just like building a tower or going to war, becoming his follower means being ready for everything it involves.

Understanding the Message

The main idea of these parables is about being fully committed. Jesus wanted his followers, called disciples, to understand that following him means putting God first in their lives. This means being dedicated to God's plan, even if it means making big changes or sacrifices.

The early followers of Jesus often gave up many things, like their homes or jobs, to spread his message. For Christians, the "cost" of being a disciple is worth it because of the rewards God promises. It's about understanding the full commitment needed and being ready to give everything for what you believe in.
