History of the County of Auxerre

The first leader of Auxerre that we know about was named Ermenaud. He was a friend of Charlemagne, a very famous emperor. Ermenaud was in charge around the year 770.

Later, in 859, a king named Charles the Bald gave the county to his cousin, Conrad II of Burgundy. But when Conrad rebelled, the county was given to Robert the Strong.

After Robert died, Hugh the Abbot became count. He appointed a viscount to help him rule. Eventually, Auxerre became part of the lands controlled by Richard of Burgundy.

The county changed hands many times over the centuries. In 1370, Count John IV sold the County of Auxerre to the King of France. This meant it became part of the larger Kingdom of France.

However, it didn't stay with France for long. In 1435, after a special agreement called the Treaty of Arras, the county was given back to Philip III of Burgundy.

Finally, in 1477, the entire region of Burgundy, including Auxerre, was officially joined with France. From then on, the County of Auxerre was no longer a separate state.
