Coupland Castle is a cool old building in the village of Coupland, Northumberland, England. It's about 4 miles (6.4 km) northwest of Wooler. This castle is actually a type of strong, tall house called a tower house. It was built a long, long time ago, in the late 1500s. Later, in the 1800s, a house was added right next to it. Today, it's known as a very important historical building!

The Story of Coupland Castle

Coupland Castle is a tower house, not a huge castle with many walls. It was likely built around the end of the 1500s, probably after the year 1584.

What the Tower House Looks Like

The main tower has three floors, plus an attic at the very top. There's also a smaller tower that sticks out from the south side. If you look closely at the entrance, you can see the year 1594 carved into the stone next to the door. The building is made from different kinds of rough stones, and it has a roof made of slate.

Who Lived Here?

A special stone above a fireplace inside the tower has the letters 'GW 1615 MW' carved on it. People think these letters stand for George and Mary Wallis, who owned the castle in 1615. Over the years, new parts were added to the castle. It was also fixed up and made better in the 1800s. In 1820, a new house with two floors and three sections was built right next to the old tower.

The Bates family owned the castle in the 1700s. In 1783, Elizabeth Bates, who was the heir to the estate, married Matthew Culley. He was a famous farmer. Later, in 1820, another Matthew Culley lived there. The Culley family sold Coupland Castle in 1928. Because of its history, Coupland Castle was officially named a Grade I listed building on September 21, 1951. This means it's a very important historical site.

The most recent owner, Robin Jell, bought the property in 1979. He lived there with his wife, Fiona. In 2020, the castle was put up for sale. Robin Jell had restored the castle, making it beautiful again. Besides the main house, the property also included a small cottage with three bedrooms and another small house called a lodge. There were also several other buildings on the land.
