Cover (combat technique) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The cover is a defensive move used in combat sports like fencing, boxing, and karate. It helps you protect yourself from hits. You do this by placing a part of your body, like your fist, forearm, elbow, arm, or shoulder, in front of where an attack is aimed.

This type of defense is called "passive." It's different from a block or parry, which are "active" defenses. A cover is a lot like "protection." For example, in boxing, a fighter might raise their arm to protect their face or head from a punch.

You can use a cover in two main ways:

  • Before an attack: You might put your arm up to protect your jaw as you move forward. This helps you stay safe while you get closer to your opponent.
  • During an attack: If an opponent throws a punch or kick, you quickly put your arm or glove in the way to stop it.

Cover in Boxing and Kickboxing

In boxing and boxe pieds-poings (kickboxing), the cover is a very common defense. Fighters use it often, especially when they are close to their opponent or when many punches are being thrown. It helps them stay safe when they are getting hit a lot.
