Covington is a ghost town located in Dakota County, Nebraska, United States. A ghost town is a place where most or all of the people have left, often leaving behind empty buildings. Today, Covington is part of a larger city called South Sioux City, Nebraska.
History of Covington
Covington was once a small community with its own post office. A post office is where people send and receive mail. This post office opened in 1858. It helped the people living in Covington stay connected to the outside world.
The town of Covington got its name from a railroad company. This company was called the Covington, Columbus and Black Hills Railroad. Railroads were very important back then for travel and moving goods.
However, over time, fewer people lived in Covington. The post office eventually closed down in 1893. When a town's main services, like a post office, close, it often means people are moving away. This is how Covington slowly became a ghost town.
