Coyhaique Province (which is Provincia de Coyhaique in Spanish) is a special area in southern Chile. It is one of four provinces in the Aysén Region. The biggest city and capital of the province is Coyhaique. This province has the most people living in it compared to the other provinces in the Aysén Region.
How Coyhaique Province is Governed
Coyhaique Province is a part of Chile's government system. It's like a big district. The province is split into two smaller areas called communes (or comunas in Spanish). These are Coyhaique and Lago Verde.
Each commune has its own local government, led by an alcalde (which is like a mayor). The whole province is managed by a governor. This governor is chosen by the President of Chile. Currently, Néstor Mera Muñoz is the governor, appointed by President Sebastián Piñera.
Geography and Population of Coyhaique
Coyhaique Province covers a large area. It is about 12,942.5 square kilometers (about 4,997 square miles).
In 2002, a count of the people (called a census) showed that 51,103 people lived here. This included 26,108 men and 24,995 women. Most of these people, about 44,850, lived in cities or towns. The rest, about 6,253 people, lived in the countryside. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in the province grew by about 14.9%.
