Coyle is a small town in Logan County, Oklahoma, United States. It is located near the larger Oklahoma City metropolitan area. In 2020, about 350 people lived there. The town was named after William Coyle, a well-known businessman from Guthrie.
Coyle started as a farming community before Oklahoma became a state. It grew thanks to agriculture and the arrival of the railroad. However, after World War I, the demand for cotton, which was their main crop, dropped a lot. The railroad stopped serving Coyle in the 1950s. Today, most people who live in Coyle travel to nearby bigger towns for work.

History of Coyle
Coyle began in 1899 as a place for farmers. This happened when the Eastern Oklahoma Railway built a new train line. The line went from Guthrie to Cushing. William H. Coyle and U. C. Guss helped the railroad buy land. As a reward, they got to choose a spot for a new town.
They picked a spot about 2 miles (3.2 km) south of an older community called Iowa City. When people in Iowa City found out the train would not go through their town, almost everyone moved to the new spot. The post office in Iowa City stayed, but a new one opened in the new town. This new town was named Coyle, after William Coyle. The Coyle post office opened on May 5, 1900. Iowa City soon became a ghost town.
Early Life in Coyle
Farming was very important to Coyle's economy, especially growing cotton. In the early days, Coyle had many businesses. These included a bank, a blacksmith, cotton gins (machines that clean cotton), a drug store, and general stores. There was also a lumberyard and a photographer.
A local newspaper, the Cimarron Valley Clipper, started in 1900. It was printed until 1949. Coyle also had two saloons (places that sold alcohol) until 1904. That year, a famous temperance activist named Carrie Nation visited Coyle. She believed alcohol should be illegal. She even had a public debate with the school superintendent, Martin E. Trapp. Right after her visit, the town government closed the saloons.
Changes Over Time
After World War I, the demand for cotton fell sharply. This made it hard for many local farms to make money. Even with these changes, Coyle's population kept growing for a while. It reached its highest number of 440 people in 1940.
Train service to Coyle ended in the late 1950s. Since then, most people living in Coyle travel to work. They commute to larger towns nearby. These towns include Stillwater, Guthrie, and Oklahoma City.
Where is Coyle?
Coyle is located about 14 miles (22.5 km) northeast of Guthrie. Guthrie is the main city in Logan County. Coyle is also about 1 mile (1.6 km) west of where Fitzgerald Creek meets the Cimarron River. The town covers an area of about 0.6 square miles (1.55 square kilometers), and it's all land.
