Coyote Wells is a small, quiet community in Imperial County, California. It's not officially a city, but an unincorporated community. This means it's a populated place that doesn't have its own local government like a city does. Instead, it's governed by the larger Imperial County.

Coyote Wells is located about 24 miles (38 km) west of El Centro, a larger city nearby. The area sits about 299 feet (91 meters) above sea level.

Exploring Coyote Wells

Near Coyote Wells, about 10 miles (16 km) to the southwest, you can find a special place called Yuha Wash. This area is home to a petrified forest. A petrified forest is where ancient trees have turned into rock over millions of years! It's like nature's own fossil museum.

Airfields from World War II

During World War II, the US Navy built two special landing fields near Coyote Wells. These were used to help support the main naval air station in San Diego. They were important for training pilots and for planes that needed a place to land in an emergency.

  • North Coyote Wells Naval Outlying Landing Field: This airfield was also called Booming Naval Outlying Landing Field. It had a runway that was 2,600 feet long. It was located about 13 miles northeast of Coyote Wells. This field was used as an emergency landing spot. It was closed in 1949, and today, there are no signs of the airstrip left.
  • South Coyote Wells Naval Outlying Landing Field: This airfield was built in 1938, about 3 miles east of Coyote Wells. It had three unpaved runways, each 2,500 feet long, also used for emergency landings. This site was sold in 1956, and like the North field, no traces of the airstrips remain today.
