Crabapple is a small, unincorporated community in Gillespie County, Texas, United States. It is known for its farming and ranching activities. The community is located about 10.5 miles north of Fredericksburg. It sits on Crabapple Creek, roughly halfway between Fredericksburg and Enchanted Rock State Park. The elevation here is about 1,775 feet above sea level.
The historic Crabapple School is an important landmark in the area. It was recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1994. Later, in 2005, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Early Settlers and Community Life
The first non-native people to settle in Crabapple were German immigrants. They arrived in the mid-1800s. Some of these early settlers included Friedrich Welgehausen, Jacob Land, and Adam Pehl. Other families like the Schmidts, Rusches, Rileys, Kneeses, and Fries also settled here.
In 1847, a request was made to create Gillespie County. The Texas legislature officially formed Gillespie County in 1848. It was created from parts of Bexar and Travis counties. Most of the people who signed the petition were German immigrants. However, some Hispanic and Anglo names were also on the list.
Crabapple School and Post Office
The original schoolhouse in Crabapple served a dual purpose. Besides being a place for learning, it also operated as the local post office. This was from 1887 until 1910.
Balanced Rock Landmark
Balanced Rock was a very famous natural landmark in the Crabapple area. It was a large stone pillar that sat on top of Bear Mountain. This huge rock was balanced in a remarkable way on a small tip. Sadly, this unique natural formation was destroyed in April 1986.

The climate in Crabapple is known for its hot and humid summers. The winters are generally mild to cool. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Crabapple has a humid subtropical climate. This type of climate is often shown as "Cfa" on climate maps.
