Craigiebank is a neighborhood located in the eastern part of Dundee, Scotland. It shares its borders with other areas of the city. To the east, you'll find West Ferry. Pitkerro is to the north, and Baxter Park along with East Port are to the south-west.
Craigiebank was originally planned in 1918. It was designed to be a "garden suburb" for Dundee. This means it was meant to be a green and pleasant place to live. The person who designed it was the City Architect, James Thomson. The plan included a central area with community buildings. These buildings were supposed to include a church, a college, shops, and places for sports.
Craigiebank Parish Church
Only one of the planned community buildings was ever built: the Craigiebank Parish Church. This church was designed in a style called Romanesque. Frank Thomson, another City Architect, designed it. The church officially opened in September 1938.
Before it was taken down in 2023, the church had a special cross-shaped main area. It also had a rectangular church hall next to it. The hall had opened earlier, in 1932. It was used for church services before the main church building was finished. The main church building had a beautiful pipe organ. This organ was installed in 1949. It came from a church in London that was damaged during World War II bombings. The organ was likely built around 1890. Today, this historic organ is in Poland. There are plans to build a new community building on the old church site.
Local Features
The High School of Dundee has its sports fields in the Craigiebank area. This is where students play various sports.
There are also several primary schools in Craigiebank. One of these is Craigiebarns Primary.
A famous person, Baron Guthrie of Craigiebank, has a connection to the area. He used to be the head of the British Armed Forces, called the Chief of the Defence Staff. His family once owned a farm called "Craggy Bank" which was located where Craigiebank is today.
Baxter Park
Baxter Park is located in the western part of Craigiebank. This park received a big update that cost £5 million. Queen Elizabeth II officially reopened the park in July 2007. In 2009, Baxter Park was given a special award called the Green Flag Award. This award recognizes well-managed green spaces.
To help make the park safer, some ideas were considered. These included adding security cameras, having more people patrol the park, and improving the lighting.
