The Crédit Agricole CIB Building is a very tall skyscraper in Manhattan, New York City. It is also known by its older names, the Crédit Lyonnais Building or the J.C. Penney Building. This impressive building stands 609 feet (186 meters) high.

You can find it at 1301 Avenue of the Americas. It is located between West 52nd and West 53rd Streets.

Building's History

This building was completed in 1964. It was built by the Uris Buildings Corporation. The skyscraper has 45 floors.

Early Days and J.C. Penney

Uris bought the land for the building in January 1964. They paid $9 million for the large area. The famous architecture firm Shreve, Lamb & Harmon Associates designed the building. It is currently the 123rd tallest building in New York City.

J.C. Penney was the first main tenant. They are a large retail company. J.C. Penney used over 800,000 square feet of space. This covered 33 floors of the building. By 1974, they used even more space.

In 1977, J.C. Penney bought the entire building. They paid $55 million for it. It became their new main office. By 1978, over 5,000 J.C. Penney employees worked there. However, in 1988, J.C. Penney decided to move. They moved their headquarters to Dallas. This left the big building empty and ready for sale.

New Owners and Big Changes

In May 1988, two companies bought the empty tower. They were Tishman Speyer and Trammell Crow Company. They paid $353 million for it. They then started a big renovation project.

These new owners worked with other companies. They also got a large loan from a Japanese bank. The renovation plan was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. It included removing asbestos, a harmful material. They also changed the building's outside color. The lobby was made bigger and redesigned. A new outdoor plaza was created. It had new paving, seats, plants, and sculptures.

Building's Name Changes

The building is named after the Calyon Corporation. This company was formed from a merger. It combined Crédit Agricole Indosuez with parts of the Crédit Lyonnais company. This happened after Crédit Agricole S.A. took over Crédit Lyonnais in 2002.

Calyon later changed its name in 2010. It became Credit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank. This is why the building is now called the Crédit Agricole CIB Building. It used to be the main office for PricewaterhouseCoopers. They later moved to a different location. Now, it serves as the US headquarters for Credit Agricole CIB.

In October 2016, the building's owner, Paramount Group, received $850 million. This money was used to refinance the building. It came from several large insurance companies.

Who Works Here?

Many different companies have offices in this building. Some of the current tenants include:

  • CohnReznick, a public accounting firm.
  • Norton Rose Fulbright, a law firm.
  • Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, another law firm.
  • Barclays, a large bank.

In the past, RJR Nabisco had its main office here. After RJR Nabisco split up, Nabisco Group Holdings Corp. also had its headquarters in the building.
