This fish is named after a Dutch scientist named Alex Ploeg. He was an ichthyologist, which means he studied fish. Alex Ploeg spent many years learning about Crenicichla fish.
He wrote important papers and described many new species of these fish. He also helped connect people in the ornamental fish industry with other groups around the world. Alex Ploeg passed away in 2014.
