Creoda (born around 493, died around 534) is a very mysterious person from the early history of Wessex. Historians aren't even sure if he truly existed! He is often called a "shadowy figure" because there isn't much clear information about him.

Who Was Creoda?

Creoda's name shows up in some old lists of kings, which are like family trees for rulers. These lists are found at the beginning of certain copies of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a very important historical record from early England. In these lists, Creoda is said to be the son of Cerdic and the father of Cynric. Both Cerdic and Cynric were early kings of Wessex, an important Anglo-Saxon kingdom.

A Mysterious Figure

However, the main part of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, which tells the story year by year, doesn't mention Creoda at all. Instead, it says that Cynric was directly the son of Cerdic. This creates a big puzzle for historians!

A similar mix-up appears in old copies of a book called The Life of King Alfred. This book was written by a monk named Asser about Alfred the Great, a famous king. In one part, it lists Alfred's father's family and includes Creoda between Cerdic and Cynric. But in another part, when talking about Alfred's mother's family, it again says Cynric was Cerdic's son.

If Creoda really did exist, he might have been a king of Wessex for a short time right after Cerdic died. This would have been a very long time ago, in the early 500s.

Why Are There Different Stories About Creoda?

Because of these confusing records, historians have come up with several ideas about Creoda. They try to figure out why his name appears in some old texts but not in others.

Was Creoda's Name Removed?

One idea is that Creoda's name was originally in all the king lists. Later, for political reasons or to change the family history of the kings, his name might have been removed from some of them. Kings often wanted to show a clear and strong family line.

Was Creoda a Different King?

Another theory suggests that Creoda was a real person who lived at the same time as Cerdic and Cynric. However, he might have ruled a different group of Saxons. For example, he might have ruled the Saxons living near the River Thames, while Cerdic and Cynric ruled the Saxons in Hampshire. This theory suggests that Creoda was the ancestor of later kings like Ceawlin, Caedwalla, and Ine. Much later, when it became important for any king of Wessex to be a descendant of Cerdic, Creoda's name might have been added to Cerdic's family line.

Was Creoda Confused with Cerdic?

A third idea is that Creoda's story might have been mixed up with Cerdic's. Perhaps some events that were originally done by Creoda and Cynric were later wrongly described as Cerdic's actions in the old texts. This kind of confusion can happen when stories are passed down over many years.

No matter which theory is correct, Creoda remains a fascinating mystery from the very early days of Anglo-Saxon England!
