What Does Tapertip Hawksbeard Look Like?
The tapertip hawksbeard is a perennial plant. This means it lives for more than two years. It grows from a thick root called a taproot, which goes deep into the ground.
Stem and Leaves
The plant has a stem that can grow up to about 70 centimeters (28 inches) tall. It often has a woolly feel and branches out. Its leaves are a gray-green color. They are long and have many pointed, triangle-shaped parts. The longest leaves are found near the bottom of the plant. They can be as long as 40 centimeters (16 inches).
Flowers and Seeds
At the top of the stem branches, you'll find groups of flower heads. These are like small bouquets of flowers. Each flower head is wrapped in special leaves called phyllaries. These phyllaries can be smooth or a bit hairy.
Each flower head has up to 10 yellow ray florets. These are the parts that look like petals on a daisy. This plant does not have disc florets, which are the tiny flowers usually found in the center of a daisy.
After the flowers bloom, the plant produces seeds. Each seed is called an achene. It is narrow and about 7 or 8 millimeters long. At the top of each achene, there is a fluffy white part called a pappus. This pappus helps the seeds float away in the wind, spreading the plant to new places.
Where Does Tapertip Hawksbeard Grow?
This plant is native to the western United States. It grows well in many different kinds of open places. You can find it in dry, sunny areas like grasslands, sagebrush plains, and open forests. It is a tough plant that can handle different soil types.
