Crescent Lake is a beautiful lake found about 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Big Lake in Arizona. It sits high up in the mountains, at over 9,000 feet (2,700 m) above sea level, within the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. Because of its location, the facilities around the lake are managed by the forest service. You can usually visit Crescent Lake from spring to late fall. During winter, from December to early April, the roads close because of heavy snow.
About Crescent Lake
Crescent Lake covers about 100 acres (40 ha) of water. Its average depth is around 10 feet (3.0 m). This lake is a great place for fish to grow big quickly. However, because it is not very deep, water plants (weeds) and tiny green algae can grow a lot. This can sometimes cause problems for the fish, especially in late summer or during winter.
To help the fish survive, the Arizona Game and Fish Department works hard to keep the lake healthy. Every spring, they add many large rainbow trout and brook trout to the lake. This helps make sure there are always plenty of fish for people to catch. They also use a special floating machine each year to remove extra weeds from the water.
