Cressbrook Farm is a very old and important house located in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. It's also known as the Former Quarters of Brigadier General Duportail. This historic home has a rich past, especially during the American Revolution.

The original part of the house was built around 1745. Over the years, it was made bigger, with a main section added in 1825. Today, it's a two-and-a-half-story building made of stone, covered with a material called stucco (a type of plaster). It has five sections, or "bays," across its front.

Cressbrook Farm: A Glimpse into History

Cressbrook Farm is more than just an old house; it's a piece of American history. It shows us what homes looked like centuries ago and reminds us of important events that happened there.

A Home During the American Revolution

During the American Revolution, Cressbrook Farm played a special role. In late 1777 and early 1778, the house served as the headquarters for Brigadier General Louis Lebègue Duportail. This was during the difficult winter encampment of the Continental Army at Valley Forge. General Duportail was a French military engineer who helped the American forces. Having his headquarters at Cressbrook Farm means the house was a key spot for military planning during that time.

Recognized for its Importance

Because of its historical value, Cressbrook Farm was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history. Being on this list helps protect the farm and recognize its significance.

Right next to Cressbrook Farm is another historic building called the Federal Barn. It was also recognized and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
