About Cressida Cowell's Life

Cressida Cowell was born in London, England. Her father was Michael Hare, who was a Viscount.

Childhood Inspiration

Cressida says she grew up in London and also spent a lot of time on a small, empty island off the coast of Scotland. These summers on the Inner Hebrides islands were very important for her writing and drawing.

She remembers spending many weeks there each summer and spring. The house on the island had no electricity, phone, or TV. This meant she spent a lot of time drawing pictures and making up stories. This quiet time helped her imagination grow and gave her many ideas for her books.

Education and Family

Cressida Cowell studied English at Keble College, Oxford. She also went to art schools like Saint Martin's School of Art and Brighton University to learn about illustration.

Today, Cressida Cowell lives in London with her husband, Simon. They have three children: two daughters named Maisie and Clementine, and a son named Alexander.
