History of Creston
How Creston Got Its Name
Creston wasn't always called Creston. Its first name was Cedar Lake. But in 1882, something important happened. The Monon Railroad built tracks that reached this area. Because of the new railroad, the name was changed to Creston.
Early Settlers and Founders
Many of the first people to settle in Cedar Lake were related to a soldier from the Revolutionary War named Obadiah Taylor I. His family, especially Obadiah Taylor III, helped plan out the town of Creston. Another person who helped plan the town was Brant McAllen.
Businesses in the Early Days
Before Creston grew, there was a small village nearby called Tinkerville. Its businesses moved west to Creston to be closer to the new railroad. By the 1880s, Creston was a busy place. It had several stores, a blacksmith shop, and a place to buy coal and lumber. There was also a grain elevator and a post office.
Creston Today
Today, Creston is a peaceful place where people live. It doesn't have many businesses or industries anymore. Some families who live there now are descendants of the very first settlers. Some of the earliest families in Creston had names like Austin, Beck, Davis, Dille, Edgerton, Hill, King, Lloyd, McCarty, Miller, Palmer, Stillson, Skinner, Stopps, Scritchfield, Taylor, Thompson, Vinnedge, and Warriner.
